Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Star Leaves His Ego Outside.
A single omission did the trick. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from the England manager, who is much too clever not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy demands the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is also on the midfielder to fit into the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.
Tuchel desires Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it in the right way. Personal talent counts but England know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when fame dominates. Still, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham had much to ponder after not being selected of last month’s squad. He observed England secure their spot at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He saw the young talent excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel discuss appreciating the group’s energy and ethics. Naturally, he has reacted in top form, scoring crucial goals for his club versus their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; leaving him out again would have put his tournament chances precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards intimidating opponents rather than teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no value to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time not playing has shown him that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support around the youngster after showing that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German stated. “Jude possesses a competitive streak. It takes a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone must help him and build an environment which he can [have] this edge towards opponents and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
The star took up much of the focus at the team news conference for the upcoming final group games versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring love and guidance. Foden has not played for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights this year but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his display in the Champions League match against the German side recently.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to select Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Is selecting multiple creators to the tournament be too many? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s game in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel repeating that if it harms the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea regarding him for years. I think it matches his abilities best.”
Tuchel agreed there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is also so used to representing his club in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager talked about Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and the other scoring strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue is high.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to foster the understanding with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting the captain to score in an international match against the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the duo combined for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.
“This is where eventually it falls to the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be assured to start versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants him committed but he will be observing him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. It will make a powerful England team into an superior one.
