Each time a major honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
