Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 people got wounded in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters approached the house close to the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals got detained at the site and one more individual who fled after the blast was located shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene displayed the building left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the property was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents caused the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander told the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the blast included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the blast had occurred on a story above the access point and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed Italian media, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
