A substantial bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.

The winning bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a well-known sushi chain, which runs outlets domestically and overseas.

"The year's tuna brings good luck," commented the entrepreneur, a familiar participant at the traditional first sale.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this industry figure is noted for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "surprised at the final price," stating, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This latest acquisition tops his previous record purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which announced the fish would be featured at its eateries across Japan.

The frenetic activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was promptly processed for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi chains soon after the auction ended.

"I believe like I've started the year in a positive way after eating something so auspicious as the year starts," shared one happy customer.
